An airstrike by Myanmar’s military, known as the Tatmadaw, on the Arakan Army-controlled town of Kyauktaw in western Rakhine state has killed 46 people and injured more than 50, according to local sources.
A Kyauktaw resident said a fighter jet dropped bombs near the Kacchapanadi Bridge and the crowded India Market shortly after noon.
“The bombs fell near the bridge and the market, where there were a lot of people,” the resident said. “Many people were killed or injured.”
The resident said the bridge and market had been deliberately targeted. Myanmar Global Media could not independently verify that claim.
Photographs sent to MGM by local sources show several badly burned bodies laid out inside a building. MGM has not independently verified the latest casualty figures.
MGM found no public statement from the Myanmar military about the Kyauktaw airstrike at the time of publication.
Local sources also said a Y-12 aircraft dropped nearly 30 bombs on Kyauktaw and nearby areas over roughly half an hour on September 24, injuring seven civilians, including two children under the age of 10.
Two bombs were also reported to have been dropped near Ngapali Beach in Rakhine’s Thandwe township around midday September 28. The number of people killed or injured there was not immediately known.
In a statement issued September 27, the AA said airstrikes and artillery fire across Rakhine state had killed at least six civilians and injured 16 between September 17 and 27. It said homes, religious buildings and schools had been damaged in Ann, Minbya, Gwa, Kyauktaw, Ponnagyun, Pauktaw, Rathedaung, Thandwe and Mrauk-U townships. MGM could not independently verify those figures or the extent of the damage.
