UN Presses Myanmar’s Military to Release Aung San Suu Kyi and Provide Proof of Life
Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, told Myanmar Global Media (MGM) that the United Nations has been pressing Myanmar’s military leaders to release the State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been unjustly detained by the regime since 2021 and to provide credible evidence that she is still alive.
The ambassador spoke to MGM while attending an event in New York on June 20 marking the 81st birthday of the detained democratic leader. He discussed efforts at the United Nations to demand proof of Aung San Suu Kyi’s well-being.
According to Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, Julie Bishop, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, personally called on Myanmar’s military to provide proof that Aung San Suu Kyi is still alive during a discussion on Myanmar held at the UN headquarters in New York on June 19, 2026.
The regime led by former military chief and self-declared president Min Aung Hlaing has not officially disclosed where Aung San Suu Kyi is being detained.
The military has held her for more than five years since seizing power in the February 2021 coup. Only recently did the military authorities release a photograph of Aung San Suu Kyi. Many social media users questioned the photograph’s credibility, citing widespread distrust of the Myanmar military.
Her younger son, Kim Aris, also known as Htein Lin, is currently leading an international campaign calling on the military to provide credible proof that Aung San Suu Kyi is still alive.
