New Yorkers Support Myanmar Democracy March

NEW YORK — As world leaders arrived in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, nearly 1,000 members of the Myanmar diaspora marched near the UN headquarters on September 19, calling for Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun to remain Myanmar’s permanent representative to the United Nations.

During the nearly two-hour march, Myanmar demonstrators expressed their support for Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun as the legitimate representative of the Myanmar people. They also condemned the military junta’s illegitimate rule and called for the restoration of freedom and democracy in Myanmar.

As the marchers passed through the city, New Yorkers cheered and motorists honked their horns to show support.
Yun Ei, a young Burmese American activist, told Myanmar Global Media that the response from New Yorkers was important in urging the international community not to overlook the crisis in Myanmar.

The New York City Police Department – NYPD also provided extensive security for the marchers.
