US Midterms: A Burmese Diaspora Perspective on the Battle for Congress
WASHINGTON — As Americans prepare to vote in the November 3 midterm elections, a Burmese diaspora voice in Washington is watching how the results could reshape the balance of power in Congress.
Zo Tum Hmung, president and chief executive officer of the Maryland-based Burma Research Institute, told Myanmar Global Media that the stakes extend beyond party control. The outcome will influence lawmaking and Congress’s ability to check presidential power.
For Burmese Americans following developments in both countries, the elections also raise questions about the next Congress’s approach to Myanmar.
Hmung identified seven states to watch in the Senate contest: Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Ohio and Texas. He highlighted potential challenges for Republicans in traditional strongholds and their efforts to capture a Democratic-held Senate seat in Michigan.
